My future purchases

I was recently given the first outfit for our future son (thanks Amy!)--that's right a boy is on the way. . . can you believe?  And since the outfit I was given, of course, has a guitar on it--I thought these finds on ETSY would definitely be in my future.

The guitar shirt is from Karina Potetsio the bib is from mimi and lola--both can be found on ETSY.

my muse at 5 months

Look at this little precious thing!  She's my niece Lola, and my muse.  Inspiring! That is what she is!  I'm obsessed. . . she is just too much.  and when she looks at me like this--well it just makes sense.  Can't wait for her to teach her cousin how to be as cool as she is!

July ETSY find

Look at these felt cuties I found on ETSY.  My Little Muse Studio on ETSY is making the cutest shoes, bibs and hats with felt appliques.  They use simple shapes and colors, which I think is so groovy . . . now my sister-in-law, Amy, who writes the HolaLolaRuth blog, isn't really into the the shoes for babies.  I tend to agree, but when I saw these, I couldn't resist.

Check out My Little Muse Studio on ETSY and see for yourself.

Summertime Nostalgia

Baba on the left, probably sometime in the late 1920s.
Baba dressed up sometime in the 1930s
Baba in the summer (1976) with all the grandkids (at the time), from L to R, my brother Foy, cousin Ferree, me (in Baba's arms), by brother Clay, cousin Beth.

So I'm starting to understand why people become nostalgic. . . with the state of the economy and some aspects of society, I am feeling it.  Nostalgia.  The longing for a simpler, earlier time. ..

I was on a walk the other night feeling the heat of summer and hearing the locusts, and all I could think about was the long summer afternoons spent with my grandmother, Melba West Foy. . . known to all her grandchildren as "Baba".

Things seemed so sweet and simple, atleast to us kids.  There were grass, plants, trees, sidewalks to skate on, and Baba there with her calm involvement in everything we did.  We learned from everything when we were with her, although it didn't ever seem like school.  It was a wonderful thing to grow up with the coolest grandmother right around the corner who always backed you up, but expected the world from you.  Seems simple and perfect to me now, and maybe it wasn't to her or anyone else, but boy I sometimes long for those days.

Baba deserves a little more explanation than her love and devotion to her grandchildren.  Baba grew up the daughter of a merchant and civil servant in the small town of Merkel TX.  She was born in 1907, went to Trinity University in the 1920s (can you imagine?!?) and came home from school to teach elementary school.  She was a progressive woman before the term was coined.

She met my grandfather, Sidney Foy, they married in the early 30s and made their life in Baird TX where he was from and where I grew up.  After losing two babies, she had my uncle and my mother at the age of 40--again unheard of at the time, but Baba never seemed bound by normal expectations.  She went back to school for her Masters degree while she had children at home and full time job.  She taught elementary school for over 30 years, and when she stopped teaching there, she opened a Foy Preschool which she ran until she was 80 years old.

My Baba was the same age as my Great Grandparents on my father's side of the family.  She was atleast 10 years older than any of my friends grandmothers.  The funny thing is I never ever thought she was old.  Yes, she had wrinkles on her face and some gray hair--but nobody noticed.  Age was another barrier she wasn't bound by, and boy does that lesson remain with me.  She had spunk.  She had a zest for life that was contagious, and nothing seemed to matter.  She survived the deaths of children, siblings and her husband, and although I know she carried deep wounds she taught us to live and learn and break molds every chance we get.

I hope I can use my nostalgia for another time as a positive tool to teach my children, and not just a melancholy feeling for the past.  I hope I can share my experience  with my grandmother and remind my children, just as my mother has taught me, that I come from a long line of strong, willful, spicey West Texas women that deserve to be remembered.   My mom will have many lessons to teach as "Dinks" to my kids.  She has her own story and strength to share in a new way as a grandmother and with the example that her mother set, she knows just what to do. . .  they no doubt will have these same longing feelings for her one day, too.

I cannot wait to get this shirt for the fall!  It is the Ruby Fay Love Hurts tee from www.missfitzinc.com  and I think it is so funny and cool.  So I'm only 15 weeks along, but I feel like something has definitely started protruding in my tummy area. .. it has been pretty much the same as always until the last couple of days. .. and it makes me feel totally different!  I'm not there yet, but come the fall, I'll definitely be able to fill out this funky tee!!!

prints on ETSY make me so happy!

Look at these AMAZING prints from "artandphilanthropy" on ETSY.  These prints with their pattern within composition, colors, and movements make me soooooo happy.  I love these colors so much b/c, to me, they are not gender specific (since I have no idea what this bun in the oven is--), they are just imaginative and beautiful.    hmmmm, I see nursery ideas everywhere!  and momoFandango blankets too!

one punk posy. . . on the way?!?

So, most of you know that I love Etsy. . . I hope to put momoFandango on Etsy someday. . . someday when I have more time.  haha.  Well, the idea of more time continues to evade me. . . and the weeks keep slipping by.  I called Amy and Clay today b/c we looked up and a week had gone by without seeing Lola or Clay and Amy.  Mind you, we literally live 5 minutes from each other!  SO CLOSE--and generally we spend lots of time together, so when a whole week slips by I sort of freak out.  Especially with a birthday just passing by, and our 2nd wedding anniversary coming up tomorrow.  It seems like just yesterday we were rocking out at Perini Ranch for our wedding celebration. What a great party that was!
Anyway, time is slipping by, and these days that is, at once, a good and a scary thing. . . you may have heard on the Hola Lola blog that Ben and I are expecting our first baby!!!!!  December is my due date, and as time slips by, I'm both excited and freaked out.  We still don't know the sex of the baby, and struggle with whether we will find out or not. . . so as of right now I'm searching for items and see the coolest things for boys and girls. . . hence the groovy cards in the pictures above.  Whether we will need the princess or the lamb card remains to be seen, but I sure love everything One Punk Posy (found on Etsy) is doing.  Check out the take on Victorian children coupled with oversized, realistic insects.  How Groove-a-lish!

So, there you go--who knows if little Miss Lola will have a boy or a girl cousin in December.  No matter the case, our baby is sure lucky to have such a cool chick as a not only and cousin but a neighbor and a friend.  They are going to be such good friends!

Now I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I'm not the only one on the Magill side of the family expecting--Matt and Megan my brother and sister-in-law in NYC are expecting a baby girl in September, and Erin, Ben's first cousin, and Steve Babcock, who also live SO close to us, and who we get to spend lots of great time with, are expecting a little boy in October (who will be big brother to little Callie Ruth, another precious little one that we love and have such a good time with).  So there is lots of fun going on in Big D, and to come for the Magill fam, too, especially with our other nephew, Charlie Magill (Wes and Karen's little boy), who lives in Oklahoma and will be the eldest of the Magill cousins.

We feel so lucky to have all the family we have and to have the precious cousins and aunts and uncles and grandparents who will all play a role in raising our child too.  We even think Lola and the baby will hopefully go to the same day care, and potentially the same school someday--wouldn't that be amazing?  They will just miss being in the same class. . . but when I grew up, my best friend was my cousin who was in one grade ahead of me.  I hope that can be the case for my baby, and Lola too.  We plan on keeping the family ties strong and important, so that there is a family loyalty and stability to draw strength from, no matter what. . . boy or girl, hard times, and good times, come what may--we love our family and hope for the same for generations to come.
